Cremation urn capacity is measured in cubic inches.

A commonly used planning guideline is approximately one cubic inch of urn capacity for each pound of body weight before cremation.

For example:

• A 120-cubic-inch urn generally accommodates the remains of a person weighing up to approximately 120 pounds.

• A 180-cubic-inch urn generally accommodates the remains of a person weighing up to approximately 180 pounds.

• A 220-cubic-inch urn generally accommodates the remains of a person weighing up to approximately 220 pounds.

When choosing between two sizes, select the larger urn.

If the cremated remains are already available, your crematory or funeral home may be able to confirm the approximate capacity needed.

For placement in a columbarium niche, cemetery, or burial vault, also compare the urn’s exterior height, width, and depth with the facility’s requirements.
